If you’ve never enabled Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for your account, you should see a 2FA promotion page when you log in. This page is a convenient opportunity for you to setup either an Authenticator App or SMS verification method for an extra layer of account security.
This article describes how to set up and manage Authenticator verification for your account.
Enabling the Authenticator App
To enable Authenticator verification and activate the app:
- Log in to your Nexon account using your email address.
- From your account menu, click Account Settings.
- Select Password & Security.
- Do one of the following:
- From the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) promo window, under Enable Authenticator App, click Enable.
- From the Account Settings page, select Password & Security. Under Security, find Authenticator App, and then click Enable.
To confirm your identity, a verification code is sent to either your email address or mobile phone.
- From the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) promo window, under Enable Authenticator App, click Enable.
- Enter the verification code.
The Enable Authenticator window is displayed. - Follow the on-screen instructions listed below.
- Download an authenticator app like Google Authenticator.
- Scan the provided QR Code or click Can’t scan the QR code for a 16-character setup key that you can manually enter.
- Enter the authenticator code, and then click Enable.
An Authenticator Successfully Enabled message appears.
- Do one of the following:
- Click Generate Backup Codes to create 10, 8-digit backup codes now (recommended). Alternately, you can generate these later, see Generating backup codes.
- Click Close to go to your Nexon account.
- Click Generate Backup Codes to create 10, 8-digit backup codes now (recommended). Alternately, you can generate these later, see Generating backup codes.
The Authenticator App for your Nexon account is now enabled. Each time your log in you must also enter a 6-digit Authenticator verification code.
Note: If you frequently use the same personal device to access your account, you can select the option to remember your device, which temporarily bypasses the Authenticator code. This option is not recommended for public or shared devices. For more details, see Managing Trusted Devices.
Disabling the Authenticator
Note: Disabling Authenticator verification deactivates your Authenticator App account, which disconnects the app from your Nexon account.
To disable Authenticator verification and deactivate the app:
- Log in to your Nexon account with your email address.
- From your account menu, click Account Settings.
- Select Password & Security.
- Under Security, find Authenticator App, and then click Disable.
- Click Disable.
The Verify Your Account window is displayed. - Enter the 6-digit Authenticator code.
Authenticator verification for your account is now disabled and your Authenticator App account is deactivated. You can enable Authenticator verification again at any time, but you must add and activate a new Authenticator App account as deactivated accounts cannot be reused.
Generating backup codes
Backup codes are 8-digit, single-use codes used in place of an Authenticator code. Once you use a backup code, it is invalidated and cannot be used again. Also, after you generate new backup codes, all previously generated codes, whether used or not, are also invalidated.
To generate backup codes:
- Log in to your Nexon account with your email address.
- From your account menu, click Account Settings.
- Select Password & Security.
- Under Security, find Authenticator App, and then click Get Backup Codes.
- Enter your password, and then click Get Backup Codes.
A set of 10 backup codes is created. - Click Download to save the codes locally on your computer.
You can now use these single-use backup codes as needed.
Using backup codes
Note: If you are using a backup code because your 2FA device is no longer usable (lost, stolen, broken), you should disable Authenticator verification to deactivate the Authenticator App account from your old device. Then, you can enable Authenticator verification for a new Authenticator App account on your new/replacement device and generate new backup codes.
To use a backup code:
- Log in to your Nexon account with your email address.
- From the Verify Your Account window, click the Use another method link, located toward the lower part of the window.
- Click Backup code.
- (Optional) Select the Remember this device option if using a personal device that you trust.
- Enter an 8-digit backup code. If you see an error message, try a different code.
Tip: Since backup codes become invalid after one use, you should notate which codes you have used to avoid error messages.
